Some of the action we watched, marvelled at, videod and cheered on included:
Highland Dancing
Scottish Hammer Throw
Caber Toss - far fewer cabers were successfully tossed than you'd imagine!
...as well as tug-o-war, weight for height throw (at which a new field record was set), and various track and field events including the 220 yard dash. And of course there was loads of...
Pipes and Drums
Isn't that tune just so totally the sound of our childhood?!?!
The bairns, naturally, couldn't resist visiting the carnies (and seeing as it was their ain pocket money they were throwing away they could have at it)...
It's not that we'd intentionally never visited a Highland Games before, it's just that, well, they were always there but we never went. But with Mis amigos back in the North East and wanting to share her childhood with her bairns and sus amigos, we grabbed the chance.
And it really was a fantastically fun - if at some point freezing and at other points nose and cheek-burning! - day. Next year though we're setting our sights on the Braemar Gathering, which finishes off the Games season in September, and you never know, maybe we'll catch sight of a Royal!
