Turns out the pipe that runs under the house from the main bathroom to the clean-out had a half inch crack running along it. This meant that tree roots could grow in to the pipe, and so block up whatever was flowing through. Every time the plumber came and cleared the blockage (and the tree roots I guess), they just grew back and the problem continued.

The problem now though is that the crack seems to stretch back and back and back and back. They're maybe a metre under the house and in to the girls room already, but tomorrow they're coming back to jackhammer the rest of the concrete floor towards the bathroom - another 2 or 3 meters maybe? - till they find the end of the crack. They hope. If the end of the crack is not in sight, then it'll be in to the corridor and then the bathroom. So at best the carpet won't be re-laid till Monday, and at worst... I'm thinking we'll move out.

Boo... Rubbish! Sorry for you, especially at this time. It's rubbish.
I am however pleased to note that you wrote that BECAUSE of the crack the tree roots could get into the pipe rather than blame the poor trees for cracking the pipe in the first place. CCTV evidence of tree roots and pipes show that in 99.9% of cases tree roots only get into pipes which are already cracked, although in 99.9% of the cases it is usually the trees which get the blame for causing the crack as well as the subsequent damage. Just call me the Lorax - I speak for the trees.
