Racing In The Street

How to build a Pinewood Derby Car: Day 1
T-minus 6 to Race Day

  1. Find pre-bought Pinewood Derby Car DIY kit and Race Day rules amongst our clutter.
  2. Search harder for rules.
  3. Email friend for rules (these are surprisingly important).
  4. Be surprised at the number of rules.
  5. Take apart DIY kit to see what's what.
  6. Look up internet for tricks of the trade - it's apparent these are needed.
  7. Realise this involves a lot more than you bargained for.
  8. Realise you don't have the right kind of sandpaper or sealer or arcrylic paint or know the 'right' way to polish the axle.
  9. Realise this is not a race for kids*, but really for their dads.
  10. Look up the internet more seriously.
  11. Be surprised at how serious this is, and how many tricks of the trade there are.
  12. Make a trip to Michaels for supplies.
  13. Stumble across a book dedicated to Pinewood Derby Car racing, and try and memorise as much as possible.
  14. Buy supplies.
  15. Head home and start.
  16. Realise you probably should just have bought that book.
  17. Think about heading to Hobby Lobby tomorrow, you know, just to see what they've got...

*since it is organised by AWANA.
