Because from the moment you get on the plane, till the moment you get off, their entertainment system is on, active, and watchable. I mean sure, you still have all the interruptions from the endless announcements that are made (which in Arabic take twice as long as in English), but still, movies, games and TV shows from the moment you get on the plane is a no-brainer. It basically makes an ideal flight**.
I noticed it quite clearly during the summer when we flew Etihad direct to Dallas. Great that it was a direct flight, but that first half hour, and the last 40-60 minutes, my kids turned into monsters. And they are very good flyers. They fought, argued, found new ways to bug each other, and the passengers around them, with no end of whining about sitting at the window/sitting next to me/watching TV. It was exhausting.
Anyway, our flying days are basically over because flights will no longer be on SLBs dime. Which means it'll be road trips and roof boxes all the way...
*Also, cos you know, we booked late, there were very few flight options left that departed in the morning as opposed to the middle of the night, I needed Middle East airlines' baggage allowances, and we definitely definitely did NOT want to leave at 2am which would have been our best direct options (BA - our second favourite airline - and Etihad).
**The fabulously friendly air stewardesses, meal options and being the youngest fleet in the sky also help.
