Don't get me wrong, I am SUPER grateful for the four years, and counting, of wood that we have dumped outside our house, but it is some u-g-l-e-e wood.
It also requires a lot of managing. At the moment it's being moved from the 'dump' to the log bins, then coming in from outside and defrosting under a radiator, then drying further on top of the radiator for 12 hours, before filling the log basket and slowly but surely making its way inside the stove, carefully managed amongst whatever natural firelighters and kindling and kiln-dried logs and sawdust briquettes we have available.
The wood that we have left alone would not burn hot enough to keep the fire going, but with a steady supply of beautifully dried and beautiful looking shop bought wood - and an even steadier management of the process inside our house! - our ugly supply is keeping us warm cosy enough, relatively cheaply.
When it's blowin' a hoolie though, as it was yesterday and is today, all bets are off.
