Aqua Boogie

We haven't even managed to catch up on all that Toots got up to last week, as while she was still catching up on the much needed zees, Joey and I drove down to Lochore Meadows for his first ever proper Aquathlon. The same Aquathlon that he didn't manage to take part in last year...

We got down to Fife in time to watch the OC take part in his third race of the day, which was part of the national Super Series event, which is too complicated to go into!  Suffice to say it's an important race in the calendar.  And it was great to watch some of the older boys, and get some top tips for Joey's coming race!

And they're off!

There was quite a lot of debate about whether he should wear his wetsuit or not.  The water had reached 20 degreesC which meant there was no requirement to wear one, and only three of the fifteen boys in his age-group (TriStars 1 i.e. 9 and 10 year olds) wore them. But, he'd never swum in open water before without a wetsuit, it also helps swimming as it makes you that bit more buoyant, and he is fairly quick at getting it off, so in the end he did decide to wear it.  And though it slowed him down by about 30 seconds and two places in his transition, he was second out of the water and still came home in second place, which was absolutely excellent.

You can even read the Triathlon Scotland write up here, and the highlights on YouTube here (check out 1m 42s)!

Well deserved ice creams all round!

We left the house at 9:30am and didn't get home till after 7pm, so it was a long day for an 11 minute race, but totally worth it for both the experience and Joey's open water confidence. "When's the next one?" he's asking!
