Buffalo Gals

Monday arrived with a disappointing 80F (26C) and chilly air: disappointing because we picked a motel with an outdoor pool and had planned on a third dip, and also because I obviously didn't pack any cardigans (seems oddly reminiscent of the last day of our first road trip).  Anyway, it was lovely weather for what we had in mind, which was hitting Buffalo Gap, fourteen miles South West of Abilene.

Buffalo Gap is a natural pass in the Callahan Divide (hills!) used originally by bison and then as an outpost on the Dodge Cattle Trail.  In Buffalo Gap is a historic village which is basically a living history museum with buildings themed for the 1880s, 1905 and 1925, including an old courthouse, a log cabin, a train station and a doctor's office.

It being the Texan lunch time (11.30am) and on Labour Day that we arrived, we pretty much had the run of the village, so pretended to be choo choo trains on the railway track, played in the old fashioned park, got married in the church and held court ("Do you plead guilty or not guilty to the charges of fighting with your sister?" They seemed to like the gavel when they were found guilty) to our heart's content.

Then it was homeward bound, where Lightning made it p-r-e-t-t-y clear he didn't appreciate being in the car seat for longer than an hour.  It was a looong drive home from the Dairy Queen in Coahoma.
